How We Source & Verify Dental Provider Data
Every record on this site traces back to a single public source - the NPPES NPI registry. Here's exactly how we collect it, classify it, refresh it, and decide which pages are worth publishing.
Data Collection
We use the NPPES NPI Registry export - the public database maintained by CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) under the National Provider Identifier program - as our sole source of truth for provider identity, location, and specialty classification. Nothing here is scraped from websites, purchased from a data broker, or manually enriched. If a field isn't in the NPPES export, it isn't in our data.
No email addresses are collected or published, and we never append third-party contact data to a record.
Data Refresh Cadence
The full NPPES export is reprocessed on a regular cadence. Each refresh: loads the latest raw export, matches records against existing providers by NPI, marks any provider whose NPI has been deactivated (and not since reactivated) as inactive, and rebuilds every materialized count used across the site - state, city, and specialty breakdowns alike - from scratch. The homepage always shows the date of the most recent update.
Entity Classification
Records are split into individual providers (NPI Entity Type 1 - solo-practicing dentists, hygienists, and other licensed professionals) and organizations/practices (NPI Entity Type 2 - group practices, clinics, and DSOs), so every count on the site reflects the correct mix of solo practitioners and group practices rather than a single undifferentiated total.
Specialty Mapping
NPPES taxonomy codes are far more granular than what we publish - dozens of codes can describe a single practical specialty. We maintain a curated mapping from each relevant taxonomy code to one public specialty (for example, both the base "Dentist" code and the "General Practice" code roll up to General Dentists), verified against a real NPPES export rather than assumed from the taxonomy spec alone. A small share of providers are enrolled under more than one taxonomy code with the registry, so a provider can legitimately appear on more than one specialty page.
Page Generation Thresholds
State, city, and specialty pages are only generated once the underlying data clears a minimum provider count, so no visitor ever lands on a page with one or two thin, low-confidence results. A city with too few providers to warrant its own page still rolls up into its state's totals - it just isn't linked as a standalone page.
What We Don't Do
- We don't scrape practice websites, directories, or review sites.
- We don't purchase or merge in third-party contact-enrichment data.
- We don't collect or publish email addresses.
- We don't hand-edit individual records - every correction has to come from a provider updating their own NPPES registration, so the data stays auditable back to its public source.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this data legally sourced?
Yes. Every record comes directly from the NPPES NPI Registry, the public database maintained by CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services) under the National Provider Identifier program. Nothing is scraped or purchased from third-party brokers.
How often is the data refreshed?
The full NPPES export is reprocessed on a regular cadence - deactivated NPIs are marked inactive, new and updated registrations are picked up, and every derived count on the site (including the ones on this page) is recomputed from scratch each run.
What if a provider's information is wrong or outdated?
We publish exactly what NPPES has on file. If a listing looks wrong, the fastest fix is for that provider to update their record directly with NPPES - our next refresh will pick up the correction automatically.
Do you collect or sell anything beyond what NPPES publishes?
No. We don't scrape websites, append emails, or buy third-party enrichment data - every field in the CSV traces back to a public NPPES record.
Why don't some small cities have their own page?
A page is only published once its underlying data clears a minimum provider count, so no visitor lands on a page with one or two thin, low-confidence results.
